Talk to the Hand: STEM-ovation in Robotic Arm Prosthetics!
Help me give my students 3D printers, filament, and electronics to build prosthetic hands.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. York's STEM and Robotics Lab's classroom raised $6,841

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our high school robotics class, students will be challenged to lend a hand to the world by designing and fabricating their own prosthetic arms. With access to NeuroMaker Hands and the resources we are requesting—a Bambu Labs 3D printer, filament, and a Hummingbird Bit classroom pack—students will explore the intersection of 3D printing, electronics, microcontrollers, and biomechanics. By seeking inspiration from E-nable’s open-source prosthetic community, students will not only practice the engineering design process, but also understand how their handiwork can make a difference in people’s lives.
Our robotics course will be organized into units that begin with 3D design and prototyping, progress into electronics and coding with microbits, and culminate in engineering prosthetic prototypes.
Learning goals include mastering 3D modeling, programming sensors and servos, and applying the engineering design cycle from brainstorming to testing. Students will gain both technical skills and career exploration opportunities in fields like biomedical engineering, robotics, and product design. By putting learning literally into their own hands, they’ll see how STEM concepts translate into real-world solutions.
This project is designed to be innovative, hands-on, and action-driven. Students won’t just read about prosthetics—they’ll build them. The Bambu Labs 3D printer will allow them to quickly iterate designs, the filament will fuel their creativity, and the Hummingbird Bit kit will connect their electronics and coding work to physical devices. With each prototype, students will grasp new knowledge and refine their problem-solving skills. Ultimately, this project gives students a chance to hold the future of STEM in their own hands, while opening their eyes to careers where technology and compassion intersect.
