My Students

We have 30 students in our class, and not a single class set of books! We don't even have enough textbooks for every kid. My favorite book was "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" when I was in fourth grade, and I have read a chapter to my kids. They LOVE the story.

We are in the neighborhood that was hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina and we are still recovering.

Five years ago, my students should have been in preschool or kindergarten, learning the foundations of their education. Almost all of my students lost that because they were displaced by the hurricane. We are way below grade level but are fighting every day to regain lost ground.

My Project

My students are already interested in the book, and most of them have never read a full novel. I could read the book out loud, but it would be so much more beneficial to them if they could follow along. We could also do book reports, book talks, and projects with the book. All of this would be new to them and would hopefully help them to love reading for fun!

This would be a different project for my students besides just reading out of textbooks (that they have to share).

They could each have their own book, and I would love for them to take the books home to begin their home libraries.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
