My students need twelve graphic novels of "A Wrinkle in Time" to pique the interest of reluctant readers and increase their reading confidence in tackling other books in the future.
"Believing takes practice." Many of my sixth grade students walk into my classroom the first day of school and tell me they hate to read! My response is that they don't hate to read, they hate what they are reading! By the end of the school year, most of the "reluctant readers" are reading wonderful books.
As a matter of fact, one of my students actually went to a local book store and bought the second book written by an author we had studied.
He was reading two books at the same time. You may say that is a miracle, but it's not. My job as an ELA teacher is to show students some wonderful literature and match them up with not only great books, but exciting reading activities.
The school district I teach in is in a rural community with not many opportunities for students to be exposed to great literature. My hope is that through Donors Choose, I will be able to bring exciting and interest-grabbing literature and activities to my classroom.
My Project
My students have monthly reading goals in their English Language Arts class. They are always to have their Silent Reading book with them. On an average, they will read their book at least twice during the school day and once at home.
I believe when they see the graphic novel version of "A Wrinkle in Time", their interest levels will soar!
Many students have shown an interest about the movie of "A Wrinkle in Time" that is coming out this year. That has gotten some of my students to read the traditional novel version. However, many of my reluctant readers are not interested.
My hope is that the graphic novels will encourage them to read and give them confidence. Students will become eager to selecting books of interest. That gained confidence will be the gateway to jump starting their reading adventure!
