Many of my sixth grade students walk into my classroom the first day of school and tell me they hate to read! My response is that they don't hate to read, they hate what they are reading! By the end of the school year most of the "reluctant readers" are reading wonderful books. As a matter of fact one of my students actually went to a local book store and bought the second book written by an author we had studied. He was reading two books at the same time. You may say that is a miracle, but it's not. My job as an ELA teacher is to show students some wonderful literature and match them up with not only great books but exciting reading activities. The school district I teach in is in a rural community with not as many opportunities for students to be exposed to great literature. My hope is that through Donors Choice I will be able to bring exciting and interest grabbing literature and activities to my classroom.
