In June (2024) | \r\naccepted a position as a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) teacher. I am committed to making the position one that will benefit all Hillsdale Local Schools students! Having multipurpose reusable resources is invaluable to the immediate and long-term success of a highly effective instructional program. Donors Choose has helped the Hillsdale STEAM program move to the next level with the contribution of the DeWalt Leaf Blowers, Rechargeable Batteries, and Charge Unit! THANK YOU so much! \r\n\r\nThe project of Fifth-grade Students Creating Leaf Blower Hovercrafts started in \r\nNovember, with groups of seventh and eighth-grade students working to build reusable Hovercraft kits. The kits are designed to be rebuilt by fifth-grade students during the mid-academic year to coincide with their science curriculum. Our seventh and eighth-grade students followed the Five Essential STEAM Skills of Critical Thinking, Communication, Creativity, Collaboration, and Problem-Solving. The work began by searching for examples on the internet, experimenting with the size of the hovercraft board, addressing air pressure, adjusting the size and number of pressure release holes in the tarp, establishing the weight location on the board, and determining the best size of the PVC pipes. After some weeks of trial and error, a hovercraft using two \r\nleaf blowers and a combination of other variables proved successful. The class lesson involving air pressure was shared, and the opportunity for every 5th-grade student to ride on a thin layer of air on the hovercraft was experienced. Part one of our mission has been accomplished! \r\nThe story does not end here! Fifth-grade students are constructing air-powered cars \r\n(using balloons) aligned to the Hovercraft project. When the fifth graders were riding the Leaf Blower Hovercraft down the inclined hallway, an eighth-grade teacher inquired about using the Leaf Blowers for another eighth-grade science class project. Plans are in place for additional groups of seventh and eighth-grade students to redesign Leaf Blower Hovercraft with their new ideas for potential improvements. In the past, our seventh-graders have built balsa wood bridges and tested them for strength as part of their Construction Strength and Stability unit. \r\nFrom that hands-on project, a new build has been added for the fourth graders, they are building telecommunication towers being constructed out of popsicle sticks. Fourth-grade students are three weeks away from a competition based on the forces of weather and Hurricane winds and features the use of our Donor9s Choose Leaf Blowers. \r\nThe fourth graders are working in teams of two or three students to build 30-inch-tall \r\ntelecommunication towers using popsicle sticks and glue. The towers will be anchored at the base with binder clips and fastened to a plywood foundation. Once a communication tower is secured, a leaf blower attached to a cart on wheels will be turned on and directed at the students' build. First from three feet, then two, and finally a foot away. Then the cart will return to the three-foot mark, and two leaf blowers will repeat the process. Finally for the last round will feature the wind strength of all three leaf blowers, all part of units on weather and potential global warming concerns.\r\nThe benefits of available reusable resources and unlimited creativity and imagination \r\nare critical for being a part of a great education for our students! Anytime we can disguise learning as fun and challenging, everyone benefits! As a teacher, | know my students have a blast participating in the lessons we share. Fermentation is usually not an overly-engaging topic for students but these lab materials really helped to both deepen student understanding and also spark their interest in it. While the weather has not been on our side this winter and we had to cut the lab a little shorter than we hoped, students still got to see the comparison of how yeast process different sugars in the absence of oxygen, to produce carbon dioxide and ethyl alcohol as products. As expected, students were fascinated that a breathalyzer device could be used with a balloon that captured products secreted by microorganisms. They were anxious to test other factors, but due to an abundance of snow days, time did not allow it. However, this kit will definitely be used again in the future. \r\nThank you again for making this memorable activity possible. I'm confident if this topic shows up on the standardized test, students will now remember that fermentation creates both CO2 and ethanol; something previous biology students struggled to understand and remember. I also think students will never look at rising bread dough the same again, as they've not got on their \"scientist goggles\" to view the world!","fullyFundedDate":1731180817272,"projectUrl":"project/science-of-fermentation-yeast-drunk-on/8512064/","projectTitle":"Science of Fermentation: Yeast Drunk on Sugar","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Abrams-Ruque","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2359835_orig.jpg?crop=2448,2448,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1721680648443","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/missabrams"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_83214","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":900,"numTeachers":17,"percentFrplEligible":36,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":95,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"52.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":19.8,"schoolId":83214,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hillsdale High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hillsdale High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/hillsdale-local-school-district/hillsdale-high-school/83214"}
