Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I already ask my students to come into class 20 minutes before the school day begins to receive additional help, to practice reading fluency, select books to read, finish homework, sharpen their pencils, etc. My students and I need additional help to enable them to read in English at grade level.

Background and Demographics: Heliotrope Elementary School, grades pre-K-5, provides services for 941 students with an ethnic population of: 99.6% Hispanic or Latino, and less than 1 % each of all other ethnicities.

As a school-wide Title I school, the student population is largely socio-economically disadvantaged. Additionally, our high number of English Language Learners creates additional barriers to overcome. My class of third graders is currently at 20 students. Research has shown that children need to leave third grade reading on grade level or they may never catch up. The Samsung Galaxy tablet would permit us to take pictures and video of the children during the school day. In addition the tablet would allow me to bring the internet resources to the children through the use of our document reader and projector. This will help the children with vocabulary development, math concepts, and expand their academic experiences.

My Project

My Project: We are obliged to give our students a series of reading tests three times a year. The purpose of these tests is to measure student progress in reading. This school year for the first time we have to give these tests using either a computer or a tablet. The requested tablet would allow me to more accurately gage student progress in reading/language arts areas such as phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development. With the tablet I would then be able to diagnose my students’ academic needs and provide the targeted intervention quickly so that the students’ deficits can be quickly and easily overcome. I will be able identify my students' reading needs more precisely so I can provide for them on-target interventions. This targeted intervention along with using the internet, taking pictures and video of the children's activities would make this Samsung tablet a valuable tool for all of us.

My students and I need 1 Samsung Galaxy tablet with keyboard and charger to help them achieve grade level reading fluency and proficient academic achievement.

Please help us complete the funds we need to purchase this practical and vital tool for our students.
