My Students

If children are the future, why wait to provide them access to things the future requires? As a teacher in a Title I school located in a low-income community within a high poverty school district, my students remain eager to learn and explore new information despite the many challenges they face on a daily basis. My goal is to provide my students with the necessary components they need to be excellent readers, dynamic mathematicians, astounding scientists, and outstanding citizens committed to making our world a better place to live.

My students are active learners who are bright, creative, and exploratory.

Many of my students come from single parent households or a guardianship where education is valued, but time and funds are limited for tutoring and academic instruction within the home. An experience such as this may prevent them from advancing and may not provide the life experiences many others see as the norm. My goal is to see them grow and expand their minds beyond the limits of their circumstance to be successful. My focus currently is on reading where I see my students struggling heavily. If they cannot read adequately, the success of my students remain at risk.

My Project

This year my classroom is focusing heavily on reading, reading comprehension, and writing. Each day my students work in reading centers where they produce writing samples, create interactive notebooks to help them retain new information, and complete projects about books they read. My classroom is in great need of supplies, such as markers, pens and construction paper. Students can use to complete these projects and assignments in reading and in other subject areas. My students will use these supplies to create visual learning aids to improve their reading comprehension, build their vocabulary as well as strengthen their writing skills. Every week my students create visual aids, class work, or write their own piece of literature that reflects the common core standard we are learning. I have witnessed my students grow a deeper connection to reading and writing through their creative expression in completing assignments.
