Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

2007...the first iphone came out and most of my students were born. These children have been raised in a world with constantly advancing technology and are ready for the next challenge. The technological revolution is a way of life for them. What an amazing time to be a kid!

I teach a classroom of 32 bright, energetic first graders.

Our school is a Title I, high-poverty school located in a farming-based area near the Bay Area of California. The current economic and housing crises have hit our area HARD. We have one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation. This has led to a lot of change for our students' families. We strive to be a shelter from the storm and provide a safe, supportive, and consistent atmosphere. Our school is 60% Latino, with over 14 languages spoken from grades K-5. Despite our statistics, we work hard to avoid becoming a "statistic." We support our students to meet our rigorous Common Core Standards, with an emphasis on math, science, and writing. We try to stay up-to-date with technology, but funding costs are usually enormous. We do a lot of sharing and making things last.

My Project

I am hoping to get a 3D printer for my classroom and to share with my school. This will have an impact on my students' academic careers now and in the future. In first grade math, my students must be able to transform 2D geometric shapes to 3D shapes and create with those shapes. This 3D printer would be extremely helpful in bringing our standards and my students' imaginations to life. In addition, I would love for my students to create 3D representations in science and mathematical problem solving, as well. It would be wonderful to have this amazing printer in my classroom!

MakerBot has a goal: get a 3D desktop printer into every school in America by the end of 2014.

Being at the forefront of this technological advance would be amazing for my students! What a fantastic gift for their future!
