My students need materials such as Giant Alphabet and Number Stepping Stones and a wagon that promote experiences to enhance learning in our outdoor classroom.
Lively, curious, adorable, shy, precocious, needy, confident, hesitant, loveable...and the list of adjectives describing my students could go on and on.
My students are different in many ways and yet all of my students learn best while actively engaged and being outdoors seems to encourage their engagement.
My students also need hands on materials to do their best learning.
These children come with very different life experiences and yet become a new type of "blended" family for the course of a school year. We love to play and learn together.
My Project
I have been blessed to teach at a school that is located in a beautiful wooded setting with an existing outdoor pavilion. What we need are student-centered learning materials that can be utilized in this natural environment including stepping stones, a wagon, binoculars, dome cones, a tent and an animal tracks game.
With these materials, our school's 150 kindergarten students will be actively learning while developing a greater appreciation for the outdoors.
The alphabet and number stepping stones and dome cone set will encourage climbing and balance skills that many children today seem to be lacking due to less unstructured outdoor play. The wagon will make it possible for our teachers to transfer these resources easily to our outdoor classroom. In the past, we have struggled to transport the materials and I feel it has limited our learning activities.
The Animal Tracks game will help our students learn about animal tracks before we search outdoors for them and also experiment making our own tracks in snow and mud with the toys we ordered. The binoculars and magnifying glasses will make exploring our outdoor environment even more exciting. The uppercase and lowercase letter pebbles will allow students to handle natural materials while practicing their literacy skills.
These materials will make our outdoor experiences even more engaging and encourage our kindergartners to explore nature in their time away from school also. We can't wait for these children to begin their adventures.
