I worry for our society. I see more egocentrism and less tolerance at older ages, and that is not healthy for our world community. The materials I have chosen for this project are aimed at bringing out the concept that though all of the students in my classroom are different, they all have the same types of feelings and all have the same power to affect other people's feelings and lives. By using the selected play materials, children in my classroom will practice tolerance skills working alongside each other. My students will play with ethnically diverse dolls and creative building supplies that will be in high demand. The children will need to practice the art of sharing and compromise. The "worry eater" dolls and "I feel" books will promote conversations about how every child, light or dark skinned, rich or poor, have emotions that affect their health and well-being. I will use these orchestrated experiences to teach my students that we all play a part in making this world a better place by having patience, grace, and empathy with each other.
