Taking Care of the Environment and Financial Literacy

My Project

My students need hands-on experiences in order to help them learn about financial literacy. The second-grade social studies curriculum includes a unit on economics. During science, we also focus on taking care of the environment.

The students will learn about recycling, reducing, and reusing.

They will also learn about things such as wants/needs, scarcity, supply/demand, and spending/saving.

I would like to provide my students with a fun and engaging way to learn about these topics. The flashlights, beach balls, and other items will be used to create a mock store situation. This will give my students the opportunity to learn about managing inventory, calculating costs, and determining prices. We will also talk about ways to recycle, reduce and reuse things when running a business or at home. The dry erase markers and erasers will be used with marker boards so we can reduce the amount of paper that is being used daily.

The students will be given the opportunity to earn classroom cash throughout the week. On Fridays, they will have to decide whether or not they want to spend or save their classroom cash. They will have to keep up with their own balances in order to know how much they have to spend each week. With your support, this project will give my students a real-life experience running a business while they learn about financial literacy and taking care of their environment.
