Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a seventh grade teacher in an inner city school, it is hard to find material to which my students can relate. Therefore, I must turn to external sources outside of the school so that I may gain my students' attention. Within the past few years, the students have been required to complete extra reading and writing prompts on the Illinois State test. I have found the "Time for Kids" magazines to have a high success rate in my classroom due to the innovative and intense articles that are published. The students cannot only relate to the articles, but as they begin to write their feelings pertaining to the article, I can only begin to think how these articles have changed their lives academically. I am requesting a set of "Time for Kids" magazines for my seventh grade homeroom students so that they may read the articles and practice extended responses. The students have certainly benefited from these magazines because there scores are on the rise. My homeroom will focus on one magazine a week. I want my students this year to have the same experience as my former students had. I want them to experience success in reading and writing. The "Time for Kids" series also informs students about current events that are going on around the world. What a great asset to have inside the classroom!
