If you stepped foot into my classroom, you would see a class of student-sponges who are eager to learn. They are curious, fun-loving, quick to laugh, and with just a little dose of sass. They enjoy a good debate and thrive on a good challenge. They attack difficult material with a vigor I haven't seen in many of the buildings in which I have taught. They constantly make me laugh and inspire me every day with their grit and willingness to challenge themselves.
My Project
I watch my students grapple with challenging texts on a daily basis. They have found the power of literature during the school year. Some have fought tooth and nail, but I can confidently say that all of my students have discovered the power of reading. I want to strengthen these skills and encourage a desire for more by keeping them reading interesting books in a multitude of genres. By placing high-interest historical fiction into the hands of our students, we will be able to perpetuate a love for reading and strengthen their reading strategies while also studying the deep historical themes and events surrounding WWII.
This program will be successful because the books we will give these students are high-interest and will appeal to their desire to be a part of the important conversations we face today as they reflect on the major complications surrounding WWII.
They will get insight into multiple perspectives and
points of view that many of them will only see if they are given the opportunity to walk around in another character's skin. If they are given the opportunity to read between the lines, we can expect these students to have an educated voice in our communities and on the issues we each face every day.
