By placing books into the hands of our students during the summer months, we will be able to perpetuate a love for reading and retain their reading strategies. I watch my students grapple with challenging texts on a daily basis. They have found the power of literature during the school year. Some have fought be tooth and nail, but I can confidently say that all of my students have discovered the power of reading. I want to perpetuate these skills and a desire for more by keeping them reading all year long. This program will be successful because the books we will give these students are high-interest and will appeal to their desire to be a part of the conversation. They will get insight into multiple perspectives and points of view that many of them will only see if they are given the opportunity to walk around in another character's skin. If they are given the opportunity to read between the lines, we can expect these students to have an educated voice in our communities and on the issues we each face everyday.
