My students need insect catchers, viewers, books, and acrylic blocks to get a better understanding of bugs and clear up misconceptions of creepy crawlers.
Our school will be entering its 10th year come this September. In our Pre-K class, that means over 180 students will have come and gone from this Pre-K classroom. Along with that, many other students have called our room home for enrichment classes, after-school programs, and summer camp.
Families send their precious children to our class every day, for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.
Children make this room their home for however long they stay and miss it dearly when they move on. It's something we take pride in, and we hope to continue doing what we love to do and that nurtures their love for learning.
I've been teaching at my first and current school for six years. No matter who enters through that door, they are part of our school family. I hope to provide them with the absolute best education we can offer.
My Project
Many adults are terrified and grossed out by insects, however, in my experience teaching pre-K, many young children are fascinated by them and want to know more about these creepy crawlers... Whoops! Here I am, guilty of reinforcing the stereotype and misconception that bugs are creepy and disgusting.
Children are very curious about insects, but their interest is usually squashed when they see adults react adversely to bugs.
I hope change that perception and accomplish what I had done last year when my kids learned about worms through our composting project. Insects have just as an important role for our environment and world and I want our children to appreciate them.
It may be difficult to get our children interested in digging for live bugs immediately and we do not wish to turn a misconception into a phobia. The insect toys and books about bugs will be the first materials to be introduced for this study. Kids will incorporate these toys in their play and develop an interest. The books will help them gain a greater understanding for questions they may have.
When they are more comfortable, the acrylic bugs blocks will be brought out so our children can study and observe the bodies of real insect specimens from a safe distance. And when the interest is at its highest point, it'll be time for our youngsters to become bug catchers and scientists. We will use the bug catching equipment and viewer to study real insects. Like real scientists, they will be in charge of finding actual bugs and observing them in the bug viewers. Their observations and findings will be documented on the laptop and the laptop will also be used to answer questions they may have that aren't found in books.
