Take My Teacher Home

My students need paperback classics, 5 ipod shuffles, and see & store book pouches to take their teacher home.

My Students

Each year, 12-30 percent of my students begin the year reading below the benchmark of 44 words per minute. As soon as I heard about this program, I wanted to use it help my struggling students improve phonics, reading comprehension, and fluency.

Like many schools in America, our school has seen hard times recently.

With factories and businesses closing down, more and more parents are faced with unemployment or jobs that pay much less than they are used to making. And yet, our students and parents are generally positive, showing gratitude to the school and attending school functions outside of school hours. Many parents volunteer to help in classrooms, the library, and with the parent's club. Our school is a safe, caring, and positive place. Students in second grade want to learn. I often work with students who are learning English as a Second language who want to read books in English, but there is not enough time for me to sit down with them one-on-one to provide them with the support they need. This project would give them my voice and the learning materials they need to successfully learn at home.

My Project

I am requesting 15 books, clear take home book pouches, and 5 ipod shuffles with headphones. Theses resources will help me compile daily take home packets for five struggling readers in my class. I will prepare lessons in reading and writing by creating custom work pages and podcasts to create a complete at home reading intervention program. I want my students to leave second grade as readers. My goal for this program is to give the lowest performing students an opportunity to reach the second grade benchmarks in phonics, reading fluency, and comprehension. If I am able to produce results with this program, it may become an adopted intervention program for my school district. This is a goal for each student, for my school district, my state, and the nation as a whole. We want our 100% of our children to be able to read by the end of second grade. It is important to have this foundational skill to be successful in the remaining years of school.
