Take Home Packets -Distance Learning
Help me give my students access to instructional materials that they can utilize during distance learning.
I am a speech-language pathologist serving over 65 students from grades Pre-k to 12 who present with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. All of my students experience significant communication impairments which impacts their ability to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Our students in New Haven come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds as well as economic backgrounds.
There are over 21,000 students enrolled in New Haven Public Schools, 83% of whom are African American and Hispanic. The median family income in New Haven is $39,000. This year, my district has identified over 500 homeless students needing assistance.
Needless to say, the majority of my students do not have a device or even wifi to access online learning. Due to Covid-19 and the limited resources our families have, teachers and related service staff such as myself have been making instructional paper packets to send home to families. As you can imagine, this has been both extremely time consuming and costly.
During school closures, I have been providing online speech and language materials as well as take-home learning packets since very few of my students have access to technology. Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) has been a life safer in regards to finding materials that can be easily printed and sent home to students and families. Unfortunately, purchasing these packets weekly can get quite costly, and finding new materials every week is extremely time consuming. TPT offers bundled packets that include multiple speech and language materials and resources for the entire year! Although this school year is almost over, I wan to be prepared with supplies, materials and a plan so that we can be successful with distance learning for next year, as it seems school will not resume as "normal"in the Fall.
