Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a new teacher to Kindergarten at Midland Park Elementary School. I am filling a new Kindergarten position which opened due to the growing school population. I am in great need of books of all types. The resource I am requesting Donors Choose's assistance with is books. With your help, I would like to provide to my students the great opportunity to read and be read to daily. The goal is that my students can check out a book of choice, so that they and their guardians/parents will read with them daily. I plan to have a system in which the parent must sign off daily that the book was read to the student and/or read together. I also will include various activities for the parent and student to do daily in order to have a book reflection. I will encourage my students to share their daily book reads during morning meetings. In a population like Midland Park it is vital to involve the parents of our students and reading is a great avenue to do just that. The materials necessary for this project are simply books of all kinds, preferably on a Kindergarten-First grade level. I have a student population of 18 and my desire is to allow them to bring home a different book each day.
I do not have enough books because I am a new teacher moving into a room that does not have books. In fact, the only books I have are the ones I purchased personally or seasoned teachers handed down to me out of sympathy. Unfortunately, most of the hand me down books are very old or ones that the other teachers really did not like. Teaching Kindergarten allows me the freedom to teach all subject areas, therefore books fiction to nonfiction, science, math, and other will be necessary. Many book companies have book sets specifically for Kindergarten or they come in a series such as Alphabet books, multicultural books, rhyme books, etc.
