Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the saying "Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt me?" That saying is not true at all. We all know that words hurt and last forever. Kids need to learn that bullying is wrong and has a lasting, hurtful affect on a person.
I am a librarian at a high poverty elementary school where there are over 700 students ranging in ages from 4 to 13 years old.
My students come from a variety of home structures including, but not limited to, foster, single parent, military, nuclear, migrant and multiple family households. The majority of the families are low income and this library is the students' only access to reading materials. This aside, they are just children and need to have fun, laugh, question, explore, create, and interact with each other in an effort to develop the knowledge and social skills needed to be successful individuals.
My Project
The Bullying in Schools books will be available for teachers to check out and use in their own classroom, but will also be used during the book club. We will read and discuss the stories as well as do team building activities. The students will also become experts and help begin an anti-bullying campaign at school.
The variety of other books which teach the students about bullying, tolerance, respect, and being kind to others will be displayed in a special section of the library available for any students to check-out. This section will be used to promote the anti-bullying campaign which will be beginning at school.
Bullying has become a huge issue in the school system.
Students need to understand what is considered bullying. They also need to be taught the best way to handle situations that involve bullying. These are not just lessons they need now, but this is something they will carry with them forever.
