This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like sitting on a hard, uncomfortable chair in elementary school, listening to the teacher talk? Now imagine standing up because there isn't a chair to sit in!
My students are in a critical-need public school in rural Mississippi.
They are in 4th grade and on average have a 2nd grade reading level. We engage in a 2-hour literacy block every morning to help them boost their reading levels. From the beginning, they have LOVED their reading centers and are always eager to jump into their independent learning time.
My Project
My students need 8 chairs to sit at during their reading centers. Currently, many of the students must stand at the computer center and the teacher center. Aware of the school and classroom's lack of resources, my students share the few chairs that we do have and take turns standing or sitting on the linoleum floor.
Please help my students enjoy the basic comfort of sitting down while learning!
Having chairs will allow them to be comfortable and thereby more engaged and attentive during their 2-hour literacy block.
