Help me give my students Flex-Space comfy floor seats and soft seat cushions in calming colors to allow them to have more seating options, learn in comfort, focus, and be relaxed!
Our school is a rural school with an enrollment of approximately 400 students in Grades 3-5. About 53.8% of students receive free or reduced-price meals. 20% of my 5th grade students receive weekend meals provided by the local food shelf.
Regardless of their circumstances and abilities, my students are energetic, enthusiastic, and curious about the world around them and deserve the best!
They are a socioeconomically and culturally diverse group of students most coming from low to middle-income homes. Unfortunately with cuts to funding in our state, there is no money in the budget for anything outside of basic classroom supplies. My students come ready to learn and budget cuts should not hold them back from having the tools and learning environment they need to be successful, engaged learners.
My Project
Why is it important for students to have other seating options in the classroom? Well, when students have a choice to choose where they sit, it gives them a sense of control of their environment, which makes them want to focus and learn. Also, comfort is key. There are students who just want to "get comfy" and not be confined to a hard chair. Some just want to stretch their legs out or just sit on something soft, which makes them feel "at home". When they are comfortable, they are more likely to be focused, calm, and ready to learn.
Each student is different, so why should every student have to sit in the same spot that may not suit their learning needs.
The comfy floor seats and seat cushions will give students the option to move their seating to any spot in the room to complete learning tasks. These seats will be used frequently throughout the day. Students will use them during literacy centers, read-aloud, and during other collaborative tasks. To help motivate students to read independently and help them read for a sustained amount of time, they will have the option to sit in a comfy spot and read for enjoyment. My students work with partners often and this will allow them to sit anywhere in the room to work collaboratively. Having these flexible seating options will provide an engaging, comfortable, and interactive learning environment for students to be successful!
