Hayward Intermediate School is a rural school with an enrollment of 438 students in Grades 3-5. About 44% of our students receive free meals and about 8% receive reduced-price meals. This is my 2nd year teaching 5th grade at Hayward Intermediate, but I also have 4 years of experience teaching K-6 reading intervention and gifted/talented in a small, rural school with over 40% of students receiving free/reduced meals. I have a passion for teaching literacy-making sure ALL students develop a joy for reading now and into their future years-and creating an engaging learning environment. My 26 fifth grade students are energetic, enthusiastic, and curious about the world around them. They are a socioeconomically and culturally diverse group of students most coming from low to middle-income homes. Unfortunately with cuts to funding, there is no money in the budget for anything outside of basic classroom supplies.
