My Students

My students are primarily UN refugees whose parents have come to the United States in search of a better life. They are curious and creative children who come from all over the world, bringing a wealth of linguistic and cultural knowledge.

Our charter school seeks to serve these students and to prepare them to be successful, both socially and academically.

Though we have limited resources, we focus on providing a safe and welcoming environment where learning of all kinds can take place. As an ESOL teacher, I teach them English and literacy, and they teach me about the world!

My Project

Because they are learning a new language, the majority of my students are struggling readers. They are still in the beginning stages of learning how sounds, words, sentences, and stories work. They have a thirst for knowledge, but unfortunately our classroom has very few low-level texts that they can actually read and understand by themselves.

My goal is to put interesting books in my students' hands that are just right for their reading abilities.

They want books about their favorite characters, animals, sports, and the world. They want stories with beautiful illustrations as well as informational texts accompanied by pictures. They also want to read books that reflect their cultures and have characters who look like them. By providing texts like these, students will be able to read independently more and more, which will not only improve their reading skills, but also build vocabulary and teach them about people and the world.
