Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students learn through experiential opportunities. Students learn auditorially, visually, and kinesthetically. Children express themselves in different ways. The students in the 1st grade are in the midst of the most important time in their lives. They are creating their foundation for success.

The expectations we have for our students in 1st grade are high.

Our students meet and exceed the grade level standards by the end of the school year. Writing has been an area of focus in our instruction this past year. Each year, as we learn and grow as educators, we discover that the students are more and more capable of being high achievers. Our students are able to write simple short narrative stories independently at the end of 1st grade. My students attend a new school in the heart of the valley in California. Their community and their homes are plagued with the problems that are related to the plight of those from the lower socio-economic status. However, these children persevere and work hard to attain their academic goals. They strive for success and come to school with an attitude that they are "there to learn." My student population is diverse, but tolerance and acceptance are celebrated in within our classroom culture. Students are responsible, respectful, safe, and prideful.

My Project

We have found using photography in our writing assignments to be a powerful tool. The students are often photographed in a variety of settings and activities. They are then given the pictures of themselves to use as motivation for writing. Student-authored books are produced. Self-evaluated portfolios are created. Autobiographies and poetry are written. Meaningful bulletin boards are made with photos of students to create a sense of ownership. Pictures of students awarded for special honors are displayed, such as perfect attendance, character recognition, and 100% tests. All of these photo opportunities develop confidence and positive self-esteems in our young students. Students are able to use photos, clip art,and illustrations to accompany their writing pieces. The students will be able to choose different genres of writing, create a piece, and print the text and pictures using this copier.

This proposal would provide a piece of equipment for teachers to provide these opportunities for many generations to come.

Picture a print-rich classroom environment, covered with pictures of students. Visualize student-made books. The addition of a printer/copier/scanner and ink will add a new level and dimension of motivation for teachers and students alike. Picture this: children being celebrated and honored!
