Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I want to integrate social studies and art- teaching the students basic printmaking techniques along with studying the Taino Indians. Our school is a majority Puerto Rican population; learning about the art of the peoples of Hispaniola is a great way to understand the culture that today no longer exists. I am in my 3rd year of teaching art at my school and am very attached to my kids. We are in a poor area with a great deal of gang problems. These kinds of hands-on experiences are very engaging for many who are overwhelmed by the problems in their lives. I have a very small budget and am always looking for ways to expose my students to more art experiences. I found that recycled foam trays work beautifully for printmaking. I already have printmaking brayers; I only need ink and some paper to print. I also want to copy images I have scanned, so I need printing ink and photo paper for my computer. I previously did a similar unit and found that the students were very engaged and retained the knowledge well. I would be doing this project with 4th graders. I would greatly appreciate my students having this experience and won't be able to do it witout this funding.
