Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a low-income/high-poverty, urban school district. Their experiences are limited. They are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, with challenges including emotional trauma, a high mobility rate, and many other special needs.

Many of them are being raised in single-parent households, and 99% receive free lunch and breakfast.

My students are 70% Latinx and 30% African-American. I have several ELL students in my class as well as special needs students. The majority of my students are far below the national and state standards in reading and math.

My Project

Though I'm our school's STEAM Lab teacher, I spend more time on some subjects. A significant amount of our time each class period is spent on technology in order to build vital computer skills for the students! We code on Scratch, use Google Slides and Docs, and submit assignments in Google Classroom. The most common request when we use computers is to use a mouse or a set of headphones. Currently, I only have enough for a handful of students, so I have to say no to every student if more than a handful want to use those resources.

Technology tools like a mouse or a pair of headphones allow students to learn the way they need to.

Some students struggle with the fine motor control needed for a touchpad, and a mouse is helpful for them. Other students need to block out noise to focus, or even add their own noises like music or white noise. Headphones allow that!

Thank you for building our technology resources and increasing our STEAM Lab modifications so every student can learn the way that fits them best.
