This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Special Education Teacher (Life Skills) at SH Elementary School in Port Arthur, Texas. Most of my students sustained the worst water damage from Hurricane Harvey. These children have low-income households to where they can not even afford to repair the damages. Due to the hurricane most of them were displaced. I teach all subjects, even specials if needed, to students in grades kindergarten to 5th, most of which are KG- 1st grade level. I really enjoy my students, and a new day brings new stories. They come into class each day eager to start their day with something new and exciting to learn. My students' disabilities range from Intellectually Disabled, Autistic, ADHD, and/or Learning Disability just to name a few. This is an extremely hard impact for children that do not take well to change.

My Project

Most students thrive in active, hands-on, problem-solving classroom environments; and this is especially true for kids with special needs. I believe that low-income/ homeless students with special needs can learn at higher levels by giving them a feel of STEM by teaching math and science through technology. The Apple IPad 12.9 Touchscreen and Apple pencil for the Apple IPad will help them use their motor skills on a big screen to build on students’ strengths and interests, and leverage their strong points to increase their comfort and excitement about learning. The students will use it for math and science station, like using math application and using manipulatives to follow along, and watching science experiments and conducting those experiments to see if they get the same results.

Many students with special needs actually lean toward STEM fields in higher numbers than other students.

Model persistence, communication, creativity, and collaboration are especially useful to kids with special needs who may need help with social skills.Some can also make use of assistive technology tools when needed. Technology can support students with special needs, especially if they have hearing or visual losses.
