Tactile Training for Trauma

My students need external assistance with coping with trauma. They often face significant obstacles that are difficult to process without first calming- which a heart rate pulse bar would help with- especially with our older kids.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a large urban bilingual K-8 school, with a ninety-four percent poverty rate, twenty-four percent special education population and fifty-seven percent English Language Learners.

Despite these statistics, our school is exceeding expectations on the state report card and have maintained a ninety-five percent attendance rate for more than five years straight.

We get high marks on our climate ratings by staff, students and families due to our trauma-sensitive focus, ability to go above and beyond in meeting our students and families' basic needs, and use of strategies to help students cope.

My Project

Our students come from very traumatic backgrounds. Teaching Socio-emotional skills can be difficult for a child to understand and even harder to apply into practice.

Tangible items that a student can use to train their brain and body to calm are essentials within our school.

As the social worker, I deal with many kids on a daily basis that have big feelings in little bodies and often can show their emotions in an appropriate way. A pulse bar is a great way to teach older kids (and even younger), what their bodies do physically when angry and by breathing/implementing calming strategies, would be able to lower their heart rate to note the difference between fight/flight and calm modes. This lends itself to a very visual method of teaching and learning. Hand and feet fidgets are lent out on a daily basis to kids of all ages to assist them with doing something constructive when angry versus lashing out and becoming aggressive. Until these skills are learned to the point of developing automatic habits, tactile assistance is often necessary.
