Tabula Rasa: Bringing Back Creative Writing To High Schools

My students need books, including 30 copes of "The Everything Creative Writing Book," to build a creative writing class.

My Students

We are lucky enough to have a creative writing class, but with no texts. They would do so well with a class set of writing books, and I can use a single copy of the others for inspirational activities.

They are so happy to learn to write for non-academic purposes but I need more resources to help inspire them.

I have taught this for three years, and I realize that although they respond well to the class, there are so many modes or writing that I want them to practice that I am not an expert in. Thus, these books would allow them to find their own muse and find joy in writing.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of the Creative Writing Manual for all types of writing other than academic, and there are no other resources like this on campus. It discusses everything from blogs to screenplays to poetry. With such an emphasis on testing, texts like this are scare. I want a class set. Two other books are for free-writing ideas, including pictures which works great. The final book shows how we can then create a literary magazine from what we write as publishing is an important part of the process.

Everyone talks about how arts are falling to the side because of testing in schools.

Now I have the chance to teach non-academic writing and after years of no texts, I know I could do so much more with these books I have already reviewed.
