Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a classroom of eager minds that crave great books. Now picture over 70 students trying to find an exciting, engaging book among several beat up shelves. Due to budget cuts, my students are limited to these few bookshelves. Their once a week Library class was cut! What will they read?

My students come from a low-income school on the west side of Chicago.

I teach two Language Arts classes and an after-school group totaling over 70 students. Over 95% of the students at my school qualify for free lunch. Many students come from families that are dealing with some kind of hardship. This makes it difficult for students to come to school with their own engaging, on-level books. Due to language issues, some families struggle to help their students not only pick high quality books but help them with their homework or research projects. My students are also highly diversified with reading levels ranging from 2nd grade to 7th grade. Imagine trying to meet the needs of so many students with so many different learning needs, personalities, and reading interests!

My Project

There are countless ways we plan to make up for our small, raggedy classroom library. These tablets will enable students to access downloadable books. They will also be able to access websites with reading suitable for their level. The ability to do research, interact with other readers through blogs, play vocabulary enrichment games, and find out more about their favorite authors will be at their fingertips! And this is just scratching the surface of all the things we can do! I can assign work and quizzes based on what students are learning. Students can also submit work to me electronically which will reduce copies and make more of our classwork paperless.

My hope is that these tablets will help tantalize students to be more engaged in their own learning.

By choosing ebooks, digging deeper into their own interests, and engaging with other learners around the globe, they will be driving their own instruction. This technology will help them become more independent, life-long learners, my ultimate goal as an educator. My students and I thank you for your support!
