My kindergarten, first and second grade students love the additional routine of getting their pillows at the beginning of class, and they compete for who gets to stack them back up at the end! \r\n\r\nTheir pillow color is assigned by the color of their spot on the rug. This allows me to easily plan groupings ahead of time. So then I can send students around the room to their assigned groups: for example: \"Everybody with a yellow pillow, go sit by the white board!\" Sometimes I have students get in their pillow groups; other times I will say \"Find a partner with a different color pillow than you!\" On those days, students can choose who they're working with and it won't be the same as their usual partners\r\n\r\nThe pillows help with grouping, but they also provide more comfortable seating in the \"baby room\" as we affectionately call that section of the library. The chairs in the main room are too heavy for the little kids to pull out easily and the tables are too tall. But just sitting on the carpet doesn't always feel great either. The pillows give them added comfort to sit. But students also sometimes choose to use them as desks or a space for their work (placing the book they're reading on the pillow like a podium, or putting the clipboard they're working with on top of the pillow in their lap). \r\n\r\nAnd of course, on Fridays, we now have pillow fights to close out the day.
