My students come from a low-income school on the west side of Chicago. I teach two Language Arts classes and an after-school group totaling over 70 students. Over 95% of the students at my school qualify for free lunch. Many students come from families that are dealing with some kind of hardship. This makes it difficult for students to come to school with their own engaging, on-level books. Due to language issues, some families struggle to help their students not only pick high quality books but help them with their homework or research projects. My students are also highly diversified with reading levels ranging from 2nd grade to 7th grade. Imagine trying to meet the needs of so many students with so many different learning needs, personalities, and reading interests!
