Tablets to Support Amazing Readers

My students need tablets to help give them exposure to a variety of books we do not have access to in the classroom and allow them to play academic games.

My Students

Our classroom is a vibrant classroom full of students who are excited and eager to learn each day, but due to budget constraints, we have a hard time getting access to a variety of materials that will give them the opportunity to practice learning in a variety of ways.

They are inspiring individuals and I take pride in that their 6 hours with me each day need to be the best 6 hours of their entire day.

The school that I work at is in budget crisis and the money that we do have isn't allotted to changing the aesthetic atmosphere of the school. Thus, I have taken it upon myself to change my classroom into a home for my students. I want them to have pride and ownership in our classroom and their learning. I feel that if they feel like school is a home they will feel safe and do their best to succeed in the hours that they are with me. I want to give them exposure to things they would not otherwise have exposure too with the tablets as many of them cannot afford these luxeries.

My Project

My second grade students will use the tablets to read stories and play academic learning games on during all parts of the day but specifically during readers workshop and Otter Block, which are times my students are reading independently. The tablets will give my students another tool to help them stay engaged and excited. They will also be used to give students who need it, a break from the regular days schedule without losing the academic piece.

These resources will do amazing things in my classroom this year and for many years to come.

Kids this age do not need to sit in desks all day - the need to move around the room comfortably and use a variety of learning materials. It will also provide the support my students need to learn in different ways than just a textbook. Finally, I am most excited about introducing technology through the use of Kindle Fires. Technology is essential to the future of education and many of these students don't have access at home. I can download apps for reading, writing, math and science that will support students at their own level.
