My students need five tablets to use online intervention programs to build their reading and math skills. About 3/4 of my class perform below grade level in both reading and math due to disabilities.
My students attend a low income/high poverty city where 95% of them have overcome more hardships by the time they enter middle school than most adults will in their entire life. For many of them, school is their favorite place, not only because school is a sense of security and structure for them, but because they are eager to learn and want to make something of themselves. I work daily to ensure that they are not only being provided the best academic instruction possible, but that thier time with me takes them away from their personal struggles and allow them to submerge in a world of endless possibilities. Unfortunately, a harsh reality is that some of my students will never leave Central Falls or low income areas but my hope as an educator is that through academics and te use of technology I can provide real life experiences that will inspire them to never give up on their dreams.
My Project
About 3/4 of my class perform below grade level in both reading and math due to a wide variety of cognitive, language, and other disabilities. Seeing them struggle and feel disappointed in themselves because they are labeled “below proficient” is truly heartbreaking for any human being, let alone an educator. With these tablets and the capabilities of technology now a days, I can provide my students endless possibilities through online intervention programs to build not only their academic needs but also their self esteem. Unfortunately working in a low income district, technology resources are lacking or extremely limited. We often have resources cut, or not replaced which hinders my ability to help my students succeed in these academic areas. Being awarded this grant would mean the absolute world to me and my students because you will be providing them the opportunities to improve and strengthen their knowledge in both reading and math, which will then provide them with the self esteem needed to push themselves to do better as they progress through school.
