My Students
More than 75% of my students' native language is a language other than English. Many students have only started communicating, reading and writing in English less than three years ago when they began kindergarten.
My students are a true representation of the global community in which we live in in the 21st century.
They and their families have immigrated from Haiti, Ecuador, Mexico, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic and European nations like Georgia. They face challenges now as multi-lingual learners, but will have a huge advantage in the future as global communicators.
We are a unique Title I district in the suburbs of New York. Almost all students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The large majority of students receive ENL, special education or reading intervention services on a daily or weekly basis to address academic learning goals.
My Project
My students need tablets to access more learning opportunities in our classroom. Currently we have 3 student PCs to be utilized by 27 students. If I wanted all students to access an activity for Math or Reading, it would literally take the entire day (or more) to rotate all students onto the 3 computers. This is not feasible at all.
The tablets will enable more students to have access to vital instructional technology that will take their learning to the next level.
I could work with small groups of students in reading or math groups on the tablets. Additionally students would be able use these tablets in different areas in the classroom allowing for flexible seating and collaboration with peers in desired work spaces.
