Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. I have a mixture of non-native English speakers, Special Education students, and Gifted students. Many come from families that are stricken with generational poverty. The best way to break that cycle is a good education.

I have received several students in my class this year from The U.

S. Virgin islands and Puerto Rico. They are displaced because of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, and they will greatly benefit from any contributions to our classroom. One of them is a non-English speaker, so any tools that I can add to my classroom to integrate visual learning will have a big impact.

I strive to give each child an opportunity to learn social and life skills while they strive to grow academically. I work with each student to develop an individualized plan that is customized to maximize their growth. No two children are the same, and they all need chances to grow in ways that are most effective for them. I am always told that I have "the happiest class on campus."

My Project

The tablets with cases will be used as tools to allow the students to improve their literacy, math, science, and writing skills. The students have access to a wealth of software that the school's current computers cannot support. These new computers will allow each student to have an individualized learning plan that fits their needs. When the students are not working with me, they will be able to log in and hone skills that they are weak in or enrich their strengths. We will also use the computers to conduct research for group projects and record data from our science projects.

Technology is an integral tool that allows each student to experience success at their own pace and have rich, positive experiences that make their school experience worthwhile.

This technology infusion will allow my students to create and publish documents and presentations and share them with our school community. More importantly, it will allow them to track their own growth and see success on a daily basis.

Making education fun and giving students options to learn is very important, even more so in my students' community. It is imperative that we make learning not only engaging but also effective for them to allow them to see and feel success. When they see that they are growing, their enthusiasm is tangible and spreads not only to other students but to the community. I love what I do because I can see the difference I make in my students' lives every day. Thanks for your help; we appreciate you all.
