My Students

Our school is a public charter school that is dedicated to infusing the arts into the academic curriculum. We serve 1900 students in grades 6 – 12 with classes in visual arts, dance, music, and theater enhancing students’ academic lives. Students come to our school because they feel safe to find a faculty and staff that care for them. They get to express themselves and find themselves through the arts!

My class focuses on cartooning as a catalyst to learn visual arts skills, techniques, creativity, and problem-solving.

They love to make graphic novels, animation and game art, and book illustrations, all things that could become possible careers in life. My students are in grades 8-12 and come from diverse backgrounds, many of which have free or reduced lunch and some have no technology at home.

My Project

In my art classes, I have many budding artists who wish to be cartoonists, comic artists, animators, animators, and book illustrators. While the traditional methods of drawing with pencil and painting with wet media are still completely necessary for today's jobs. Professionals in these fields must be able to take their drawings from paper to the computer to keep up with the modern world.

My cartooning classes range from grades 8 – 12.

I would like to prepare my students for careers in the arts. Many of my students are preparing themselves to go to college. Being an arts charter school, many of our students come to our school with these hopeful aspirations. And, our state standards also dictate adding digital aspects to the curriculum.

In my class, I would like to incorporate STEAM into the curriculum and enhance their visual arts learning by having the students create electronic portfolios. With these portfolios, students will be using the 21st Century skill of technology and learning professional skills that can be carried on into college and careers.
