Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school, we enjoy having a close relationship with a community that is very diverse and engaged. My students come from very different backgrounds. In my class, students will learn in both English and Spanish. For many of them, Spanish is the only language they speak. This year, kiddos won’t only learn their letters and sounds, numbers, and colors. They will also begin to learn a whole new language. It will be an exciting year for all of us, but it will also be a lot of hard work!

At the moment, we are working through some challenging times, and we need your help.

Most of my students are from low-income families. These are the families that are mostly at risk during this time, as they experience loss of jobs without any pay. We are not just a class or a school, we are a community and a family. It is my responsibility to do everything in my power to help my students through this time.

My Project

During the COVID-19 virus outbreak, it became apparent to me just how vulnerable my children and their families are. No one was prepared for this, and now the ones that are least protected - low-income families with no job security are the ones at most risk.

The one thing I can do on my end, as a teacher, is to try to continue to create engaging lessons for my children, and the only way to do that is through the use of technology.

Unfortunately, it turned out that some of my families do not have access to any technology their child could interact with, such as tablet or computers.

I want to emphasize that I am not asking for a toy or a luxury item, I am asking for a learning tool. My students worked so hard this year, and they grew so much. They made me and their parents so proud. It hurts me to know that their learning will stop because they do not have the same access to technology as their peers.
