Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am fortunate to be the teacher of a wonderful group of eager-to-learn first graders at a Title I school in Los Angeles. Most of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students are also learning English as a second language.
My students come to school every day with a desire to learn and work hard.
I want to be able to give them the opportunities and resources they desire and are necessary to help them achieve whatever dream they have for themselves.
My Project
My first grade students need tablets to build, practice and apply the skills they are learning in the classroom.
Our school has very limited resources and my students only have access to tablets for about one hour per week at best since the tablets are shared with many other classes.
In order for it to be beneficial, my students need tablets much more frequently than this to use math and literacy apps. They also use its WiFi capabilities to research information for science and social studies projects.
Thanks to DonorsChoose, we have a set of 6 tablets but, unfortunately, that is not enough for the class. We need another set of tablets so more students will be able to use them independently and collaboratively.
Since we do not have headphones, the noise level of tablets can be distracting to other working students. We also need headphones to keep the noise level and distractions to a minimum. In addition, having individual headphones allows each student to have his/her own pair for management and sanitary reasons.
