Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"You will never fail until you stop trying." I have this quote in my room written in two languages, Spanish and English. I teach at a dual immersion school, and half of the day my students learn in English and the other half in Spanish.

I am very proud of my students and I am very proud to work at at school in which we are at an economic disadvantage.

More than half of our population come from homes that identify themselves as poor. The resources for our children have diminished tremendously over the years, making it more difficult on us the teachers to educate and to empower our students. Our school is the only one in the district that is a dual immersion. We teach our children in Spanish and English. The population is equally divided in English Language Learners and English Learners. This is very unique program for our students. By the time our students leave 5th grade more than half of the students are able to read and write in two languages.

My Project

I am the GATE (Gifted And Talented Education) coordinator at my school, and one day I had my group of GATE students tutor my regular class students in math using white boards. In the back of my mind I was telling myself, how neat it would be if those white boards were electronic? It turns out that the evolution of the electronic tablets are capable to do all the things you can do with a white board and more. I brought my personal iPad to school one day and during class time I had one of my GATE students work with a small group of students who were struggling with two digit times one digit multiplication my GATE student was able to help them out using my iPad. This was very successful! The struggling students also had the opportunity to use the iPad to work on the sample problems. They were motivated to really learn as they knew they had the opportunity to get their hands on the tablet. I bring my tablet to school everyday and kids our allowed to use it to workout problems.

We are in the 21st century and technology is just taking over.

Our children are the future and they need to be technology ready. The use of technology in the classroom makes things much easier. Our students feel empower when technology is present in the classroom.
