This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In a world gone gadget crazy we are trying to use technology to reinforce beginning skills.
My students like all young children love all things tech.
They live in an area that is a lower socioeconomic area, and attend a small elementary school in the middle of the city that is within walking distance for most of our students.
The majority of our students do not have a home computer and thus the time they are able to spend using the same technology that children in higher socioeconomic areas use daily is rather limited.
My Project
I am asking for a tablet computer along with the cover, adaptor, headphones and other supplies needed to keep such a item safe in a classroom. My students may not have much access to technology in their daily lives but this has not dampened their enjoyment of it. Students are much more likely to willingly practice place value or phonics when it is presented on a screen rather than pencil and paper. If our class receives a tablet we will use it for small group instruction during math and reading. Students will also be able to use the tablet to type of their writing to share with the class and read our school system's ebooks.
Not only would a tablet allow my students the chance to practice the skills they need to master in the first grade but it would also allow them the chance to widen they technological skills.
Skills which we know are key in this ever changing technical word. We are attempting to prepare students for jobs that have not even been created yet and giving my students access to technology such as a tablet gives them a fighting chance.
