This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a third grade special education teacher in a Title I school located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I teach in a co-taught classroom, which fosters a mix of students with disabilities and general education students. My students are incredibly positive, ambitious, and unique kids who deserve access to the tools they need to succeed! About 36% of students in our school have special needs, and 10% of students are English Language Learners.

I am motivated by my students' dedication to learning and growing academically, socially, and emotionally.

Forming strong and loving relationships with my students is key. I want each and every student to feel comfortable exploring and questioning throughout the school day. Students in my class collaborate and explore through hands-on learning, partnership discussions, and small group work. Any contributions made to our classroom is greatly appreciated by my students and myself. Thank you for all your help making our classroom as accessible and engaging as possible!

My Project

My students need kidney tables to be able to efficiently and effectively work in small groups. These tables will allow students to have their own space to work, while also sitting in a way that allows them to discuss with their groups. These tables would also help teachers assist in guided reading and other small group work. Teachers will be able to observe and assist multiple students comfortably. Kidney tables will also be beneficial for individual conferencing with students in reading, writing, and math.

Allowing students to work comfortably, while collaborating with teachers and classmates, is essential to their academic growth.

These tables will be paired with flexible seating that will give the students choice and focus while working. It will be a quiet place set apart from student desks where students can work, even when not in a small group. These tables would be very beneficial to students and teachers alike!
