Who thinks reading a on cold, tile floor sounds exciting?

My students love to take part in group reading activities and small group instruction. Unfortunately, having to sit hunched over on the cold floor causes distractions, discomfort, and less effective discussions. My students attend an inner city charter school in Pennsylvania. Many students come from families that work hard to ensure their children will receive a quality education. Small amenities, such as this table, are symbols that confirm our families have reached their goal! I have a wonderful group of kids. They are very respectful and fun loving. Being fourth graders, they are eager to share every story related to topics covered. We have made reading and writing groups work, but having a table will create a more comfortable and appropriate place for instruction.

My Project

My students need a reading table to effectively complete guided reading activities. Being able to read comfortably and uninterrupted allows students the opportunity to to really get involved in a story. Having the space to write down important events, notes, and answer questions, while reading, are the activities I would love to share with my students. Small group instruction allows us to work closely together and discover things in a story selection more vividly. Right now my groups of students and I sit in a corner of the classroom on the floor. When trying to complete certain reading strategies, my students need to grab a textbook, or an object with a hard surface to lean on. A reading table will allow for smoother, less chaotic reading period. I would love to inspire the love of reading within all of my students. I believe having a comfortable reading area will allow my students the opportunity to LOVE reading.

Group activities are such an important part of a child's learning experience.
