Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

We have chosen this project to help our students gain sensory awareness by providing them with materials to meet their sensory needs. Many of our students with sensory processing struggles, social-emotional deficits, or those with Autism have difficulties processing sensory input like others. This can make an average day overwhelming and difficult for students to self-regulate their emotions.

The Sensory Swing will help support students' proprioceptive input needs, as well as give them comfort and the Sensory Ball set will provide a variety of textures for students to practice gross motor skills and hand-eye-coordination skills.

When students are dysregulated due to proprioceptive input issues they can't regulate their senses or exhibit social-emotional wellbeing. We have chosen the Dart Board game and the Four-in-a-Row games to provide visual and tactile sensory stimulation while building hand-eye coordination in our sensory calming area. These games will also guide our young preschoolers in learning how to take turns and learn executive functioning skills, vocabulary skills, and cognitive skills. When we provide a space and materials for our students to calm their bodies and enjoy the peacefulness of the ocean's waves we give them time to gain social-emotional and sensory awareness.
