Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a diverse International Baccalaureate school. We have students from all nationalities and various abilities. Every day, my students encounter someone who is different from them, whether it is a different language, race, or learning style.
Every day my 27 students come into the room hungry.
They are hungry for learning and for food. My students all come from low-income families who are unable to afford much for their children. All our students receive free breakfast and lunch every day. Several of the students come on the first day without a backpack. Others come to school in the middle of winter with no coat.
My Project
My students spend about 7 hours a day in the same classroom. The few times the students get to leave the classroom are to go to recess and to get lunch. We actually eat in our classroom due to the lack of a cafeteria in our school. I try to give my students the opportunity to move about in the room by offering bean bag chairs, a large carpet, and Hokki stools.
This desk will allow my students the chance to move while learning.
This desk has a bar that the students can swing back and forth with their leg. The students also have the option to stand while they are solving math problems, reading a book, or working on a science experiment.
