Sweet Students Need Sensory Stimulation

Help me give my students tools that will help them regulate their emotions, provide sensory input, and allow for fun counseling sessions!

My Students

I have the wonderful opportunity to work with 410 students in a lower-middle class community in American Fork, Utah. We are blessed with a level of diversity that not many schools in Utah have. We have students from many different cultures, religious backgrounds, and economic backgrounds.

Each of my students has a unique way of learning and their own unique style.

This year I have worked with students who have too much anxiety to come to school, students who struggle with self-harm and suicidal ideation, students who have such big emotions they can't control themselves, and students who have suffered trauma. The pandemic has only made these struggles harder for the students to face!

Each student is worth catering to and each student deserves to have the tools they need to be successful. All of my students this year have put in so much work to improve themselves and I am so proud. Throughout the uncertainty of the pandemic, these students have faced their fears and come out strong and they deserve all the support they need to keep improving!

My Project

Many of my students struggle with sensory overload, anxiety, depression, or struggle with Post-Traumatic stress from the trauma they've endured in their short lives. The pandemic has exacerbated these issues!

Sensory input is scientifically proven to help all people when they are in "limbic hijack."

I am asking for items that will help specifically to help children who are in limbic hijack. The sensory items in my project such as lap blankets, fidget tools, legos, and stress balls can help students restore their sensory needs so they can get back to class and work. The massage chair is for our Wellness Room and provides another way for students to get sensory input to help them calm down their brains. The sensory headphones are for students who struggle with sensory overload when things and loud and will allow them to participate in loud activities but remain safe. The wiggle stools are for my small group counseling sessions and will provide sensory input for students while they are working with me in a small group but also allow them to focus on the task at hand. Finally, the tic-tac-toe, dartboard, and bingo set are for many purposes - they can be used in individual counseling sessions as a fun way to get to know students. They can be used in group counseling as a way to get to know each other or as a game used in tandem with a lesson. these items can also be used in a classroom counseling lesson along with a game to help solidify knowledge and skills.
