My students rock! Nearly 450 students come through my room each week ready to make music, collaborate with one another, and have fun as a community. We are in the largest urban school district in Kentucky, and our students come from all backgrounds and cultures to form one amazing school.
The students who enter my classroom each week are our future leaders and innovators; they have a passion for learning and love interactive, hands-on learning experiences.
As we face the challenges of teaching, learning, and making music during a global pandemic, I want to give these young musicians and future leaders every opportunity possible to make music together in a fun, engaging, interactive way. Seeing their faces light up when they discover a new instrument, a new rhythm, or a new song is the highlight of my day as a music educator. It is my goal to continue giving my students these new experiences in a fun and engaging ways in spite of the challenges presented at this time.
My Project
Flexible seating and sensory objects will allow students access to tools they can use to stay focused and be successful in class. This is important every year, but especially in the 21-22 school year when students are facing so much as we navigate being at school in the middle of a global pandemic. More students than ever before can really benefit from these simple tools to help them calm their body and keep their mind focused.
The highlight of music for most students is playing instruments; with the addition of the instruments in this project, each student will be able to have access to their own hand drum and egg shaker during class.
With safety protocols in place to limit the spread of COVID-19, we need a few more instruments in order to allow all students to have their own instrument during class without having to share. The new hand drums and egg shakers will be added to those we have to create a class set of each instrument, allowing more opportunities for music making experiences for all 450 students. Penpal grips will be used to attach mallets to xylophones, allowing more time for music making and less time spent passing out materials.
Each year, I work to ensure that all students in my classroom can see themselves represented in the books we read, the music we listen to, and the activities we do. The books included in this project will help bring more diversity to our music library. The books in the Little People, Big Dreams series will be used to introduce influential musicians. Others, like I Promise and Change Sings, will be used as a jumping off point for lessons that allow students to move, play instruments, sing, and create their own music.
