Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My high school has recently implemented a phone-free school-wide policy. Some teachers are asking for activities to fill in the gaps when certain students finish early. "You're done? Grab a Rubik's Cube!" Providing students with a manipulative brain puzzle is preferable to allowing them their default "I wanna look at my phone" mode. I love a phone-free classroom. Students are more focused, and more communicative, and I expend less energy asking them to put away their devices and airpods.

I plan to keep five of the cubes for my room and will share the rest with new teachers at my school who need support as they hone their classroom management skills.

I have been teaching for almost thirty years, so implementing the phone policy in my room was not a heavy lift for me. But battling students' addiction to their phones can be particularly discouraging for younger teachers. Rubik's Cubes are just one possible solution to a difficult problem teachers face. Swapping out phones for better, brain-friendly activities requires flexibility, ingenuity, and fun!
