This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students are always extremely excited to learn to use our 3D printers. There is a steep learning curve for middle schoolers on how to design objects that will successfully print. Though I have been collecting every failed print and scrap of filament generated in my classroom for two years, I haven't been able to find anywhere to recycle it.

The ReDeTec ProtoCycler will be a valuable tool me to teach students about recycling practices, sustainability, and synthetic materials.

We will be able to use it to shred their failed 3D prints and scraps and extrude our own custom recycled filament. This machine will have lasting impacts on my students, their understanding of recycling practices, and my classroom budget.

I will also include this machine in a greater unit of learning about synthetic materials, natural resources and waste management. Additionally we will use the recycled material to prototype for our engineering classes, and to teach community members about 3D printing through service learning and outreach.
