Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our kids are truly great! Everyday our investment in them is paying major dividends and they are making significant intellectual gains. The problem is that we never have enough interesting books for them! We don't have a school library and we really need more engaging books!
We are located in the South Bronx which is ground-zero for childhood poverty.
Our students' and their families cannot afford to buy books even in good economic times. In these tough times, things are much worse and our school budget has been cut for seven consecutive budget cycles. Our good books are in very short supply! This is why I have written this grant to you. We desperately need your help to get these suspenseful books and help our amazing students progress to higher reading levels. We use the Reader's Workshop model from Columbia Teacher's College. What that means is that each student is expected to read a book at his or her reading level. To accomplish this task we must at all times have a multitude of interesting books at a variety of reading levels. The books I have carefully chosen for this grant would help our classroom library to meet these goals. These books would immediately be used by students to improve their reading comprehension.
My Project
We teach strategies for how to think deeper about a text you are reading. These strategies are profoundly effective if the book is right for you. These books will be right for many of our kids. They will be utilized from the day they are received at our school for an hour a day of independent reading. Many students will also read the books every night at home for multiple hours.
Our students have been begging me to get them interesting on-level books to read. The books I have selected for this grant are written by R.L. Stine the legendary scary book writer! The books involve suspenseful tales that really engage kids and keep them excited about reading! Fear street is an extremely popular series for Middle School kids! My students need multiple copies of 21 different books from the incredibly popular series "Fear Street"; by R.L. Stine for a total of 71 suspenseful books! These books will be read and reread over and over again.
